Masterbatch is a concentrated mixture supplied in pellet form. For US and Mexican plastics manufacturers, a carrier resin holds pigments, colorants, fillers, or functional additives so they can be introduced into a larger quantity of base polymer during processing.

The carrier is part of the product

The pellet is not only a convenient package for pigment. Its carrier must disperse in the production resin without creating an avoidable compatibility problem. This is why the polymer and process belong in every technical brief.

Color and additive masterbatch solve different needs

Color masterbatch changes appearance. Additive masterbatch changes a functional property such as slip, UV response, or another documented behavior. Some formulations combine functions, but each claim still needs to be verified for the specific grade.

Dosage is a starting point, not an isolated promise

The correct let-down ratio depends on concentration, resin color, wall thickness, opacity, process, and the approved standard. Record dosage by weight and keep the trial conditions with the retained color sample.

What to provide when requesting a recommendation

  • Polymer and whether it is virgin, recycled, or blended
  • Conversion process and temperature window
  • Part, wall thickness, and surface finish
  • Physical color reference or measurable target
  • Known end-use or regulatory requirements

Approve the system, not only the pellet

A masterbatch should be approved in the final resin and a representative process. Visual consistency, dispersion, surface quality, and any required part performance are properties of the complete system.
